Psalm 37
Psalm 37:8

"Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;

Do not fret – it only causes harm."
Cease: abate, forsake, let alone
Anger: nose, nostril, face, ire, wrath

Forsake: loosen, relinquish, leave

Wrath: poison, rage, hot displeasure

Harm: do evil, hurt

Looking at the literal meanings in the Hebrew, this verse

sounds like someone who looked really angry. His nostrils

were flaring from breathing hard, his whole face distorted

with an angry scowl. We are to forsake these feelings, stop

it! Forsake the wrath, loosen up. That wrath is a poison

and it poisons the one who has it. If we fret over things,

it can cause us to do evil and to do harm. Who does that

hurt? It hurts the one who is fretful and angry.

There is a blessing in Numbers 6: 25-26. "The LORD bless

you and keep you, the LORD make His FACE shine upon you and

be gracious to you, the LORD turn His FACE toward you and

give you peace."

As Christians we are to reflect what God shows us. Imagine

Yourself to be a mirror. If God looks into the mirror, the

mirror will reflect the face of God. By trying to get to

know God more, we are enabled to see God in many different

ways. So in the blessing I quoted, God makes His FACE shine,

He turns His FACE towards us and gives us peace. If we are

reflecting Him, the angry scowl should disappear and be replaced

with a gracious look. Our faces should look at people with a look

that reflects the peace that only God can give.

When we are reflecting God, the poisonous wrath and the ability

to cause harm will be drained away and we will be left with His

blessing in our lives.

There is no reason to be angry and fretful when we know God

Is on our side.
